MedMissions’ Poultry Project 
The Purpose:
“He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done.” Prov. 19:17 (NIV)
The purpose of this project is to show kindness to the poor by helping them out of poverty. In an agrarian society lacking protein in its diet, small animal projects can greatly improve a family's nutrition as well as helping them out of poverty.
The project will also provide opportunity to share the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ with the families we are assisting. In this way we will be affecting both economic and spiritual poverty.
The Project:
From our chicken hatchery loans of 30 – 70 chickens are made to fifty pre-selected poor families annually. The families receive education on how to care for poultry prior to receiving the animals. Our project manager visits each family weekly to continue education and to help manage ongoing problems. As the families become more adept at caring for their flock the manager begins to space out his visits until, at the end of a year, the families are fully educated and have experience in managing most problems that arise.
The Business Model:
As important as giving the families the physical resources is giving them a business model to successfully manage their new enterprise. Two thirds of the eggs produced will be sold, providing revenue for the families' needs and feed for the chickens. One third of the eggs produced will be used for feeding their families. The meat and eggs chickens produce are a rich source of nutrition vital for a countries with protein-poor diets.
The Project’s Desired Effect:
The effects of the poultry project are to:
- Lift poor families out of poverty
- Improve the nutrition of poor families
- Improve the availability of low cost meat and eggs in a region
- Provide an opportunity to advance the gospel
